"Wizard of Westwood: John Wooden" Los Angeles, CA - 1993

Meeting someone you've admired your whole life is sometimes daunting. There are few figures in sports who embody the sport itself - John Wooden embodies everything that college basketball stands for.

Nicknamed the "Wizard of Westwood," Wooden won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period as head coach at UCLA, including a record seven in a row. Wooden is considered the greatest NCAA basketball head coach of all time. But many people, including myself, knew him simply as "Coach".

I photographed Coach three times but hung out with a half dozen more.  He would offer up his wisdom and wit whether we were on his porch drinking tea on the balcony of his modest Encino apartment, or eating breakfast at VIP's, his favorite Tarzana breakfast spot.

Here he would hold court most mornings from the his booth second to last from the main entrance.  He was very soft spoken and extremely gracious but also had a strong mid-western bent to his views.  He seemed to love asking questions more than answeing them.

I will always feel blessed to have known him.
