Muhammad Ali - Los Angeles, CA - 1991
One of my all-time personal heroes! I actually got to meet The Champ four times but only photographed him once. This shot came from when the boxer visited San Diego in 1991 to attend the opening of a Muslim book store. I read that he was going to be there that morning in the newspaper (before the internet) and drove from my Santa Monica apartment down to San Diego.
He always handed out autographed Muslim tracks wherever he appered: boxing matches, book store signings, etc. He was so gracious with sharing his time with everybody. And it seemed as if literally "evebody" knew who Muhamaad Ali was! Young kids, old men, soccer moms, eveybody wanted to shake Ali's hand. I was also lucky that this was before "selfies" as he only gave me a few minutes to shoot him.
I'm not ashamed to confess that I cried the day he died. His unbevieble impact that he left on me as a youngster growing up in Phoenix, AZ watching the world from the Westside of Phoenix (which might as well well been on the moon) during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement.
Here was this unbelievable prolific athlete (Gold Medal winner at the 1960 Olympics) running his mouth at the white power structure of the South! He shocked me with his audacity and seduced me with his wit and charm. And then, when he was stripped of his World Champion belt and chose prison over fighting in an unjust war, he overwhlmed me with his commitment to his beleifs and integrity.
I'll forever be grateful to have had the chance to capture himon film and I will never forget every minute I spent with him.
